State of the Art Sleep Testing

There are many different tests your physician may recommend you have done. The most common test to diagnose a sleep condition is a sleep study. We have two state-of-the-art, comfortable, sleep center locations in Fairfax (Merrifield) and Loudoun, Virginia. Our rooms come with internet access, cable TV and access to a private bathroom with shower. We also have the ability to do high quality home sleep testing.

The Impact Sleep has on your Overall Health

A good night's sleep is good for your heart! According to a 2011 study by the American Heart Association, poor sleep quality is linked to an increased risk of high blood pressure, which is a potential cause of heart disease. Poor sleep quality puts stress on all of our systems and if left untreated, can cause a number of health issues. It is also felt that sleeping too little can cause disruptions in underlying health conditions like blood pressure and inflammation, which are leading causes of heart disease. Good sleep leads to less infections, better cognitive function, improving memory retention and helps to maintain your blood sugars.

Durable Medical Equipment for Sleep Medicine

Virginia Heart is committed to providing the latest equipment available on the market to fit your specific needs. The golden standard for the treatment of sleep apnea is Positive Airway Pressure (PAP) therapy. Even with normal use and maintenance, PAP equipment should be replaced regularly in order to avoid mask leaks, discomfort, and upper airway infections that could lead to poor compliance. If you are an experienced patient or new to the therapy, we are here to provide the support needed in order for you to be successful with your PAP therapy.

  • What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

Many of the patients we diagnose and treat have Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). OSA is a common condition in which the flow of air pauses during breathing while you sleep because the airway has become blocked.  It is caused by the relaxation of muscles in the upper throat in people who have a narrow airway which results in a blocked airway.

  • What is Central Sleep Apnea?

Central Sleep Apnea (CSA) occurs when your brain does not send the proper signals to the group of muscles that control your breathing.  A few central apneas may be normal as you fall asleep but are considered abnormal when they happen frequently.  Much like Obstructive Sleep Apnea, these apneas can disturb your sleep and cause drops in your oxygen levels.

  • What are the common treatments for Sleep Apnea?

There are many options to treat sleep apnea including, CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure), BiPAP, oral appliance for sleep apnea, upper airway procedures and others. Every patient has different needs, speak with your sleep provider about what is best for you.
