Dr. Edward Howard is the Director of the Interventional Cardiology Division of Virginia Heart. He is board certified in Interventional Cardiology, Cardiovascular Diseases and peripheral vascular imaging. His key areas of clinical interest are in complex coronary intervention, peripheral vascular disease management, as well as general cardiology.
Dr. Howard's widely recognized expertise has gained him the positions of Director of the Interventional Cardiology Quality Improvement Program at Inova Fairfax and Inova Alexandria, where he serves as the current Director of the Cardiac Cath Lab as well as the Co-Chief of Cardiology. He has also served as the Cardiac Cath Lab Director at Virginia Hospital Center from 2019-2024. He holds educational roles as a member of the Inova fellowship training faculty and is an Assistant Professor of Cardiology at the University of Virginia.
Dr. Howard was born and raised in the United Kingdom where he graduated top of his class from medical school in 2002 and pursued his early postgraduate training. He next completed his PhD in Anatomy at the University of Hong Kong before moving to the U.S. to complete his Interventional Cardiology training in Washington, D.C. from 2007-2015. During his early training he became interested in peripheral vascular diseases while working in a medically underserved area as a vascular surgery house officer. There he witnessed high rates of uncontrolled diabetes and limited (or no) access to modern limb salvage techniques which exposed him to the devastating personal and societal consequences of amputation. The combination of these experiences, plus years of U.S.-based training in critical care cardiology and cardiac interventions, led to his passion in treating peripheral vascular disease to prevent limb loss.
As a founding member of the renowned Inova Cardiogenic Shock Team, Dr. Howard also has a wealth of experience in managing complex coronary intervention, including orbital and rotational atherectomy, supported PCI, intracoronary lithotripsy, drug coated balloon angioplasty, and left main intervention amongst others.
In his free time, Dr. Howard loves spending time with his family, traveling widely, practicing hot yoga and spending time out on the water. He is a lifelong Formula 1 fan and supports Arsenal FC in the English Premier League.
